How I Broke Free from Familiar Patterns: Three Steps to Lasting Change
Aug 21, 2024Embracing Change: A Journey of Learning, Consistency, and Personalization
Embracing change is a journey that requires more than just determination; it demands an understanding of the process. Whether you're adopting a new diet, parenting style, or skill, our natural tendency is to stay within familiar patterns, even when they no longer serve us. With the right approach, however, we can break free from these "familiar loops" and embrace a new way of being.
Step 1: Learning
Our brains are wired for familiarity, so change begins with acquiring new information. As we learn, we form new neural pathways, creating "highways of habit." *Dr. Joe Dispenza explains, "When you fire and wire the same circuits in your brain repeatedly, you hardwire it into the same patterns." To break this cycle, we must "think greater than we feel" through mental rehearsal and continuous learning.
Once we've absorbed new information, the next challenge is turning that knowledge into action. This leads us to the next crucial step in the journey of change: consistent implementation.
How do you approach learning new information?
Step 2: Consistent Implementation
Knowledge alone isn't enough. We must consistently practice our new behaviors. *Research shows it takes at least 66 days to form a new habit. This timeframe is crucial—it means committing to over two months of practice before our new behavior becomes automatic. Understanding this helps us approach change with a *growth mindset, removing expectations for quick fixes. Instead, we focus on consistent practice, allowing our brains to wire new habit pathways.
What small steps can you take today to start building a new habit?
Step 3: Personalization
Finally, we must make the change our own. This involves fine-tuning actions to match our preferences and needs. It's a process of trial and error, regular self-reflection, and openness to adjustments.
How can you personalize your approach to make it work best for you?
My Personal Journey
Fourteen years ago, I committed to investing in my health to prevent disease and stay strong as I age. I learned from experts, but I discovered that not everything suited me personally. Through trial and error, I created a sustainable lifestyle that works for me. For example, I changed my grocery shopping habits to ensure I always have healthy options. I also figured out my ideal portion sizes and how to navigate social situations while sticking to my health goals.
Just as we fuel our bodies with nutritious food, we must nourish our minds. By staying curious, reflecting on choices, and being open to change, we can solidify new behavior patterns and make change feel authentic and sustainable.
Remember, it takes at least 66 days of consistent practice, but the results are worth the effort. These steps will keep you focused and intentional until your new habits become second nature—your new "familiar." Change is a process, and taking it one step at a time is okay. Along my journey, I adopted the phrase "slow and steady wins the race," which has helped me stay patient, committed, and focused on the next smallest step. Allow yourself the grace to learn, adjust, and grow. Each day brings you closer to making your new habit a natural part of your life.
